Hacking Your Future is a free weekly memo that provides readers with practical and applicable tips for uncovering their future success. Readers are challenged to re-imagine their personal and professional narratives, goals, and objectives, and re-invent their lives and work in a manner consistent with their new vision of the future.
This week’s focal point: Over the past several weeks I’ve been going through two transformations. The first is the wonderful addition of our son, Asa, bringing more joy to my family. As such big life changes often do, it has led to a second transformation, a time of reflection and self-examination, revisiting the important question of “Why?” Why do I do what I do? What are my long-term objectives? What am I missing or avoiding today because I am preoccupied with the future?
- Identify and make a list of the different roles you play in your life. For example, you may be a mother, husband, entrepreneur, athlete, etc.
- Think about the last 10 years of your life and identify what you are most proud of in each of those roles.
- What specifically has had the greatest impact on who you are today?
- Now, put yourself 10 years into the future and repeat this exercise. It is important that you write from the future looking back. In each area, use this exact language: “As a (mother / father / entrepreneur, etc) I am proud of the fact that …..”
This should help you gain insight into what and where you ultimately aspire to be.
The Fulcrum: As you look at the decisions before you today, start by viewing them in light of your long-term vision of personal success and fulfillment. From here you can begin to better answer the question of “why?”
